A Story Close to My Heart
As the third-generation owner of Asian Artistry, there are many moments that make me reflect on how far our family journey has come. But few feel as personal and meaningful as seeing my grandfather, Ngeow Cher Seong, featured in Our Amazing Pioneers by Shawn Seah.
This children's series was created to bring Singapore's history to life for young readers, celebrating pioneers whose stories reflect courage, resilience, service, and sacrifice. To know that my grandfather's journey is now part of that legacy is something I hold very close to heart.
My Grandfather, Ngeow Cher Seong
My grandfather's story was one of perseverance. After coming to Singapore from China, he rebuilt his life and craft through hardship, eventually learning goldsmithing skills and growing a family tradition in jewellery-making that would continue across generations. His work was shaped by close ties with both Indian craftsmen and Peranakan families, and that heritage continues to inspire what we do at Asian Artistry today.

When History Reaches the Next Generation
What makes this especially meaningful is that the story has been shared in a way that children can understand and remember. I think that matters deeply. Heritage should not only be preserved in museums or memory - it should also be passed on in ways that feel alive to the next generation. Shawn Seah's work is dedicated to helping young readers connect with Singapore's past through engaging storytelling.
A Legacy of Craft and Perseverance
For me, this is more than a book feature. It is a reminder that behind every family business is a human story - one built on grit, skill, and quiet dedication. We are grateful that my grandfather's journey, and the tradition of Peranakan jewellery associated with our family, can continue to inspire new generations in such a meaningful form.
